#TheChris100 2021: 100-81

We made it. After a whopping 650 honorable mentions, we are at the meat of the list, the true Chris 100. Thank you once again to everyone who submitted a ballot, as well as anyone who submitted blurbs and helped with match recommendations. I couldn't have done this without you. Also thank you to brandon from maine for the banner image we'll be using for the list itself. It kicks ass. You kick ass.

100. Wotan (6 ballots, 313 points)
Last Year’s Ranking: 5
High Vote: Flae (23)

Recommended Matches
  • w/ Impulso vs. Difunto I & Mini Difunto (Chilanga Mask, 6/19)
  • w/ Impulso vs. Difunto I & Mini Difunto (The Syndicate Intensidad, 7/4)
  • w/ Impulso vs. Difunto I & Mini Difunto (LLUE, 7/11)
  • w/ Black Terry vs. Difunto I & Makabre (Chilanga Mask, 7/31)
"A nasty bout with Covid meant that Wotan had an even more limited schedule in 2021 than in 2020. As far as I know, he only had four matches make tape last year. He once again had to delay his long blood feud with El Hijo de Fishman, but he found another worthy rival in Difunto. His matches against the Difuntos (often tagging with Impulso) were some of the most essential lucha brawls of the year. Hopefully Wotan's recovered from the virus well enough at this stage that he can go back to destroying guys on shows again in 2022. Please murk again soon, king." ~ Chris Gibbons

“Wotan’s greatness continues to radiate even in 2021 where he was struck down by COVID, forcing him to miss half of the year and work very few matches overall. His series of matches embroiled in rivalry with Difunto I were classic Wotan vengeancecore and to somebody like me, if I get to see The Wotan Match in all its destructive glory even once in a year, I will give him his proper due.” ~Flae

99. Master Wato (8 ballots, 314 points)

  • vs. Hiromu Takahashi (NJPW, 12/5)
  • vs. DOUKI (NJPW, 12/11)
"The rise of Master Wato is incredible to me. He shouldn't be this good. Wato flat out sucked during his excursion in Mexico. He had maybe two good matches there, and I might be being generous with that assessment. When he came back, he was given this goofy ass kung fu gimmick. And now he's one of the best wrestlers in New Japan Pro Wrestling. It's not a joke. He's not a 'meme wrestler' or whatever despite the gimmick. He's just a legitimately great worker at this point, and it came out of fucking nowhere." ~ Chris Gibbons

98. “The King” Nick Gage (8 ballots, 317 points)
Last Year’s Ranking: 69

  • vs. Gregory Iron (GCW, 9/2)
  • War Games Match (GCW, 9/4)
  • vs. Jon Moxley (GCW, 10/9)
"Did Nick Gage return too quickly from his injury that put him out of commission in 2020 to start working deathmatch epics again in 2021? Yeah, probably. Has that fucked up his body even further, making him even slower and limiting him more in the ring? Yeah, definitely. But he's still Nick Fucking Gage, The God Of This Shit, etc. etc. Even on a bum leg, as limited as he was this year, there are few workers who can make a deathmatch epic, well, epic like Nick Gage. He got a damn pizza cutter spot on TNT. It possibly cost the network ad money. He's still got it, baby." ~ Chris Gibbons

"I'm really excited for the new fat and shitty Nick Gage. I hope he gets as big as Tremont but with worse knees. Nick Gage wrestled Chris Jericho on TNT that's ahem TURNER NETWORK TELEVISION the channel that RIZZOLI AND ISLES AND FRANKLIN AND BASH were on. [Eric Gargiulo voice] Excuse me!" ~ Bucky

"Sasha missed a bunch of time over the course of the year, but when she was around, she was still one of the most can't-miss stars in WWE. It maybe wasn't on the level of 2020 when she was maybe one of the three reasons to watch Thunderdome TV, but when she had an opportunity like the Wrestlemania main event, she delivered." ~ Chris Gibbons

  • vs. Krule (ICW NHB, 10/23)
  • w/ John Wayne Murdoch vs. Dale Patricks & Kevin Giza (IWA MS, 11/4)
"Satu Jinn's ascent to stardom on the deathmatch indies has been great. Just a couple years ago, he was the most hidden of hidden gems, with a couple gnarly matches a few dedicated soldiers were passing around trying to get the guy more attention. Now he's in a car with guys like John Wayne Murdoch and Reed Bentley as one of the premier bleeders in the Midwest and in ICW NHB. Who doesn't love a big Majin Buu lookin' dude bleeding buckets and torturing dudes?" ~ Chris Gibbons

"The most disgusting pair of tits you've ever seen. Extremely funny and weird and unique wrestler. Satu once said on Facebook that his main inspiration in the ring is that he "wanted to look like Majin Buu or some other Dragon Ball Z character come to life". The match with The Heathen KRULE from ICWNHB in Florida is extremely nasty and really one-of-a-kind. Krule is basically like 1991 Undertaker but in a deathmatch where he no sells lighttubes and shit over and over. And Satu ends up a plucky babyface, almost feels like he's Bret Hart in there against deathmatch Diesel. The Hoodfoot match is hotter than hot with a dynamite crowd, killer pace and some gnarly visuals. Satu Jinn!!" ~ Bucky

  • w/ Cash Wheeler & MJF vs. CM Punk, Darby Allin & Sting (AEW, 12/22)
"Halfway through 2021, I was one of the people who thought FTR was a fraudulent tag team. I hated last year's feud with the Young Bucks, because they shockingly had very little chemistry. But Cash and Dax spent the second half of 2021 proving guys like me wrong, having great matches with the likes of Proud & Powerful, Martin & Sydal, Darby & Sting, and many more. The Lucha Bros. feud had its ups and downs, but the Top Guys' chemistry and timing is once again undeniable. Accusations of them being carried by reputation were greatly exaggerated, and I apologize for being part of a faulty narrative" ~ Chris Gibbons

  • vs. Sadika (ICW NHB, 10/2)
  • vs. John Wayne Murdoch (ICW NHB, 10/23)
"Rickey Shane Page is the leader of 44OH and Atticus Cogar is the exciting young star of the stable, but Eric Ryan really is the lifeblood of the group. He's such a workhorse, the kind of deathmatch worker that you can put into any kind of role. Ryan is a savvy vet, but has such a controlled insanity to him. He really does work with just about any opponent you put him with, whether it's a rising deathmatch star or another vet. If you talk about who the ace of the American deathmatch scene is, you'll probably mostly hear arguments about Alex Colon or John Wayne Murdoch, but Eric Ryan really deserves just as much discussion." ~ Chris Gibbons

  • vs. DOUKI (NJPW, 11/24)
  • vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru (NJPW, 11/29)
  • vs. YOH (NJPW, 12/3)
"Desperado is a name I'm shocked to have seen actually drop in this year's rankings. Are people just bored of this guy being one of the best juniors in the world? That must be it. Whatever peoples' opinions of recent New Japan have been, El Desperado's reputation has stayed extremely strong, for good reason. He's an absolute gem. Just an all-around great wrestler, the exact kind of guy NJPW is lucky to build a division around." ~ Chris Gibbons

"I've liked Bobby Lashley fine enough in the past, and I like very little WWE in the past few years, but Lashley is one of the surefire hits in the company for me which is a marvel considering the fact that he is 45 years old. He really does come across as a superstar, and he's doing some of the absolute best stuff in the ring whenever I see him." ~ Chris Gibbons

"I've said many a slanderous thing about Kazuchika Okada and I have meant every word of it, but the thing is, it's not because he's not an extremely talented wrestler. He is. And when he's working like a complete dickhead against a junior, a young boy, or somebody else he sees himself above, he really does come across as the total package." ~ Chris Gibbons

"Still one of the best technicians in Japan, Shota was a highlight of January in his short lived feud with Yasu Urano. He cooled off after the first two months, but maintained a certain standard throughout the year in all his matches, and had plenty of good tag matches in Tenryu project alongside Kenichiro Arai." ~ LEBRONGOAT

  • vs. Medico Brujo vs. Sick Boy (IWRG, 10/17)
"El Hijo de Fishman, the enemy of Wotan and the enemy of God, had another year of chaotic violence. With his primary enemy sidelined with Covid for most of the year, he had to set his targets on the likes of El Hijo del Alebrije, El Hijo de Mascara Sagrada, El Hijo del Espectro Jr., King Charro, and many other victims. Though he ranks significantly lower in this year's iteration of the list, he is as essential as ever. Any match with El Hijo de Fishman has potential to start a riot. This is a man that had a match end with him and his opponents in police custody." ~ Chris Gibbons

"At first I see Ricky Starks' ranking and think DAMN, we underrated this guy. He's a star! Then I see his actual his actual output in 2021 and think DAMN, we overrated this guy. He didn't really do that much! But indeed, the truth lies in the middle. Starks didn't do much because of his neck injury, but he always came across as a star in that ring when he had the chance. The man had multiple banger matches with Brian fucking Cage of all people. In the year 2021! That's worth a spot on the list if anything." ~ Chris Gibbons

"Gay porn! That's what sells. No matter what happens to our society, no matter the wars or pandemics, the cultural collapse that continues at an ever increasing pace. There will always be money in gay porn." ~ Bucky

"I don't know how Toxin's body isn't just completely broken at this point. How long has this guy just been one of the most completely nuts guys in lucha libre? When I see Toxin's name on a trios match, I know he's going to do a sick dive or he will be on the receiving end of a sick dive. I know there's a good chance that mask is getting ripped and there will be blood gushing down it. And 2021 he worked the most matches he ever has, including a record amount of IWRG matches despite having a regular AAA gig. Are you addicted to destroying yourself, Toxin?" ~ Chris Gibbons

81. “The Savageweight” Fred Yehi (6 ballots, 370 points)

  • vs. Mat Fitchett (BACW, 8/26)
  • vs. Moses (BACW, 8/31)
  • vs. Robert Martyr (CZW, 12/19)
"How many times do we have to do this whole song and dance with Fred Yehi? He's been the best technician in America for like seven years, and he has such an odd career to show for it. Still can't get a real contract anywhere, but gets short runs in New Japan Strong and zombie Ring of Honor. He seems to be the current ace of whatever Deej's current version of CZW is? They seem to like him at AAW, but that promotion's a few years since it had much hype. But that doesn't matter, because Yehi is always worth hunting him down. Hell, the best shit he has is often the weird stuff on his Youtube page with grainy footage of him wrestling circles around guys you've never heard of in front of seven people. That's the thing about Fred Yehi: He always brings it, and it's almost always A+ stuff. Still one of the absolute best in the world, still criminally overlooked." ~ Chris Gibbons
