“It’s
unfair how good a wrestler PAC continues to be. He was the perfect guy to carry
the All-Atlantic Championship, dragging decent matches out of meh wrestlers and
putting on shows when he could. His grumpy demeanor belies how fluid and
dynamic his offense is, but it makes for a great in-ring mood.” ~ TH

“Injuries
and general wear on Muto’s body prevented him from having quite the same year as
he did in 2021, but it was a treat when he did wrestle. As he announced his
plan to retire, he had some phenomenal matches in NOAH and NJPW, clashing with
other legends as well as putting over the next generation of stars like Kaito
Kiyomiya and Great-O-Khan.” ~ Chris

“Tenryu
Project was still one of the most crucial promotions in the world in 2022, and
the largest reason why is Keita Yano. Keita is appointment viewing. It doesn’t
matter where on the card or who he’s wrestling, Keita is going to have an
absolute technical clinic in that ring. He is going to do transitions you’ve never
seen before. 2022 got to see him shake it up with the likes of Hideki Suzuki,
Masakatsu Funaki, Don Fuji, Shota, Masayuki Kono and many, many more. Somehow,
he was often the best wrestler in the ring. That he’s not higher on this list
is absolutely criminal.” ~ Chris
“Keita
motherfucking Yano man. This year was almost a redemption run for Yano, with
him finally pushing beyond just being a sleaze indie legend and becoming the
widely-recognized top level pro wrestler he’s always meant to be. Genichiro
Tenryu saw the vision and let Yano run wild in Tenryu Project, busting out kickass
matches against pretty much everyone while never losing that creative, esoteric
mindset that allowed him to reach this level in the first place. Yano’s matwork
is the type of shit that keeps me alive, the way he’s able to riff on the mat
and casually invent holds is incredible. 2022 was ruled by Keita Yano, and 2023
is shaping up to be another killer year for the wallabee.” ~ jom

“LA
Park probably could’ve made this list just off the strength of the instant
classic match with Villano IV, but he had plenty of matches elsewhere to pad
out his resume, often against some of his other great rivals. Someone should
get Tony to finally be the one to pay whatever the monetary demand is for the
Rush/Park apuestas in 2023 since nobody else has been able to do it.” ~ Chris

“Andrade’s
AEW has largely been defined by the same kind of directionless booking that
plagued him in WWE. It’s a damn shame, because when Andrade was on TV wrestling,
he was still one of the best in the world. The entire feud with Sammy and Darby
was filled with money matches, and the stuff he did with Rush at the end of the
summer was fun.

“‘Time
destroys everything we do, whatever it is.’ - Thomas Bernhard
Tomoaki Honma is not wrestling other people,
he is wrestling himself. His style can only be described as a man trying to
escape his mortal shell, to transcend the struggle and pain that come with
years of damage for the Wrestling Business. He does this by going out for every
match with the intent to die in the ring, to kokeshi himself into infinity.
Honma cannot lie on his back properly, he can barely move his head, his
demonlike voice cuts into the soul of Korauken Hall, but he knows that he can
kokeshi. He believes in the kokeshi. He has to do the kokeshi because the
reaction from the crowd is as valuable as the air he breathes. And he does
kokeshi. Tomoaki Honma will kokeshi until the day he dies.” ~ brendan durant
“I
watch a lot of hardcore wrestling, and it takes a lot to make me wince. In
2022, Tomoaki Honma just walking around the ring was enough to make me wince. I’ve
done several write-ups mentioning older wrestlers’ worn, broken bodies already.
None of them are on Honma’s level. His performances in the JTO matches
especially are a sight to behold, a man putting his body through unreal levels
of punishment for the sake of his art. I winced, but I couldn’t look away.” ~

“The
last true spectacle in wrestling. Guys like Lesnar just don't exist any more,
in a time when my childlike wonder at the sport of pro wrestling has faded
Lesnar is the one guy on earth who can make me feel the way I did when i first
started watching, that "did i really just see that??" feeling.
Workrate is fake, the only true metric for what makes a great match great is
what it makes you feel, and no lengthy epic between two technical maestros made
me feel anything like Lesnar scaling the wall of the Elimination Chamber like a
shaved King Kong up the Empire State Building so he could throw Austin Theory
to his death from the top of it. Doesn't matter that he only had four matches
of any significance, those four matches were EVENTS. Not even Roman Reigns (the
agreed-upon Best Thing In The WWE at the minute) has the same aura Lesnar does.
Reigns isn't the one who tipped the ring over with a tractor (and fuck your
Move Of The Year, THAT'S the Move Of The Year).” ~ alistair from twitter

“Jun
Kasai has been doing this for 25 years. He’s maybe gone through more glass,
more light tubes, more razor blade boards than any other wrestler in history. You
look at Jun Kasai and see more scar tissue than regular skin. He has done so
much in these two and a half decades of deathmatch wrestling. So when at 48 years
old he goes and has one of the best years of his career with several of his
best matches ever, you can’t really do anything but look in awe. Those JTO matches
are special and will be talked about for years to come. Just an absolute hell
of a year for the legend.” ~ Chris

“There
may have not been a more consistent wrestler in 2022 than GENTARO. No matter
who he was put up against, GENTARO would always rise to the occasion, working
guys over with tight old school holds and throwing brutal uppercuts and
forearms. His peaks this year were especially great, with him and Araken
working one of the most deliberate and well-constructed matches of the last decade.
GENTARO’s just one of the few wrestlers in the world you can always count on to
